Research Award B10-Food Industry Press Release
The Bio Thesis Research Award recognizes groundbreaking work that addresses current challenges in the organic food sector
In light of the current challenges facing the German agricultural and food industries, it is crucial to find sustainable and fair solutions to protect our planet and the animals that inhabit it. The organic sector plays a key role in this by advocating for holistic approaches to nutrition, health, and fairness - from production to plate.
The organic sector needs sustainable solutions: The winner of the BioThesis Research Award 2024 in the category of Best Bachelor's Thesis is Paula Henzl from the University of Hohenheim. Her research focused on organic dairy farming. The award, which promotes the next generation in organic research, was presented for the tenth time on February 14, 2024, at the Biofach trade fair in Nuremberg. The prize for the best Master's thesis went to Silke Oppermann from the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde. Paula Henzl's work, titled “Determinants of Meat Quality and Performance in Calves Raised with Their Mothers”, particularly stood out to the jury. It was conducted as part of the WertKalb project, which focuses on creating added value for male calves in organic dairy farming. The study investigates the meat quality and performance of calves raised with their mothers and analyzes various factors, including farm management, feeding, and slaughter weight. The results show that calves raised with short-term contact with their mothers achieved the best outcomes, although further research is needed to gather detailed information on farm management practices.
